Just in case you thought the new Land Rover Defender didn’t have enough presence or 110 inches wasn’t enough, step up the 130. The instantly recognisable silhouette has been enhanced, demanding attention both on and off the Road.
So what does this mean in numbers and how does it compare to the rest of the family? Well, Land Rover has added 340mm to the overall length of the Defender 130, which equates to an overall length of 5.36m! To put into perspective that’s roughly half the length of a London Bus and interestingly 10cm longer than the 2022 Range Rover LWB. As standard, it means the Defender 130 comes with 8 seats spread across three rows as standard. That’s one more than its refined flagship model brother and a first for the Defender.
You’d be hard-pushed to find 8 seats in any other car on the luxury market unless you enter the realms of the Mercedes EQVs or Land Jets. Don’t be fooled either, rather than consider you part of the luggage, the third-row seats are spacious and well-considered. So much so that you have your own sunroof and the choice of them being fully heated leather. You also won’t need a megaphone to tell the driver to turn them on either, because the controls are available all the way at the back.
The enjoyment for the least popular people in the group doesn’t stop there either. After your hike through the Lake District, you’ll be greeted with full armrests, cup holders, full-size windows, and seatbelts that don’t dangle uncomfortably above your tweed flat cap as you fight to untangle yourself looking for the buckle.
Up front, it’s business as standard. The Defender is effortlessly cool with its oversized, chunky but rugged elements which give the impression they could be kicked, flicked, and scuffed by dirty hands, hiking boots, and wet coats for another 26 years. The reality is that they’ll probably be gently brushed by private school uniforms, mulberry handbags, and suit trousers, but that’s the beauty of the new abundantly diverse Land Rover Defender.
Impressively, the Defender 130 has maintained its drivability despite the added length. The powertrain delivers ample torque and the handling can easily make you forget it’s not the 110. Surprisingly it feels no bigger when crawling through mildly tight suburban streets, which is probably down to a great driving position and the ability to see all four corners of the car.
Land Rover has also said that despite the added size the off-road performance remains unaffected on the new Land Rover Defender 130. So whether on or off the road it seems like the Defender 130 is going to be a hit from families all the way to groups of dapper gentlemen and their clay pigeon shotguns.
